Learning objectives:

  • Describe the sample types required, and tests available for, the laboratory diagnosis of major viral infections of poultry.
  • Describe the main methods of isolating and detecting viruses which infect poultry.
  • Explain the main serological tests used in the diagnosis of viral infections, including the Haemagglutination Inhibition test (HIT), Agar gel immunodiffusion test (AGIDT), Virus Neutralisation Test (VNT) and Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA).
  • Discuss the main problems encountered with laboratory diagnosis of viral infections.
